Numbers around us

Summer 2011, London Fields Primary School, Hackney, London

RIVA worked very intensively with two year 4 classes over three weeks. The children who were aged 9-10 had not done art at the school for two years in order to concentrate on their literacy and numeracy.

The project gave a space for the children to develop their creativity and their confidence. The objective of the theme was to explore how numbers not only occur in mathematics but are also to be found in nature, define ratios in visual art and architecture and give structure to choreography and music. The children realised how numbers are all around us and how they determine our lives.

Apart from visual artists the children worked together with composer and musician Alison Beckett, with dancer and choreographer Susannah Rickman and also had the chance of observing artist-in-residence Sophia Marinkov Jones creating her own work on numbers.
