I (De) Sign my Space

Spring 2013, Nightingale Primary School, Hackney, London

Artists in residence: Nienke van Wijk, Sophia Marinkov Jones

The Year 5 children involved in this project created work around their personal memories at school, reflecting on their experiences through the following work units:

-‘Reminding Myself’: The children’s most memorable experience at school.

-‘Measurements of Me’: Individual design of wooden 30cm rulers, expressing various aspects of the children’s time at school.

-‘My Personal Timetable’: Individual feelings during individual lessons using the emotional colour wheel

-‘Topography of Emotions‘: Personal experience of spaces within the school visualised by adding a volume to the floor plan.

-‘Moving through Time’: Re-enaction of the most memorable experience in the very space it happened.

-‘Emerging and Disappearing Memories within School’: Monoprints, using acetate and black ink reflecting the children’s memories.

All the elements plus the audio recordings of the children's memories came together in a film, shown during the final exhibition.
